Celluloid (2013) Review by Tejas Nair from Bombay City, India
Dr. J C Daniel's life and times with an adaptation of two of hisrelated novels is chronicled in this biopic so extensively executed byKamal.

Prithviraj is phenomenal. After his Ayalum Njanum Thammil's exoticperformance, Celluloid maintains his superstar rank in not onlyMalayalam cinema but also Bollywood (Aiyyaa & Aurangzeb). Mamata, though she complements Prithivraj, didn't have much to play asSreenivasan had to portray. Supporting cast is good while thescreenplay is non-linear with year-by-year graph. Music & score is aptand reminded me of Dilip's Vellaripravinte Changathi!

Showing the plight of his initial film-making stages (ofVigathakumaran) and how his determination finally pays off as he isregarded as Malayalam Cinema's father is a wonderful Streaming & Iappreciate the whole crew behind this informative classic. It alsoprovides us with facts that are worth knowing and thus, makes it atleast a one-time Streaming. With old reminiscing inputs of songs, moviesand the anti-anachronistic screenplay, Celluloid is melodious andenjoyable.

Too bad, most directors nowadays have failed to come up with similarbiopics or intriguing themes, but yes, Celluloid is truly an ode toMalayalam cinema with almost every film-making factor taken care of.But, I personally believe, the short running time could have beenextended. Kudos!

Can be Streaminged with a typical Indian family? YES

Celluloid (2013) Review by konway7 from United States

One of the things I love about this film is Director Kamal's emotionalapproach in this film. It is extremely powerful. For Example, thescenes where JC Daniel (Prithviraj) is dying and Janet (MamthaMohandas) sadly calling "Daniele, Daniele." During these scenes, theaudience was so quiet to the point where you could hear a pin drop inthe movie theater! Everyone was great in this film. Prithviraj, MamthaMohandas, Chandni, Sreenivasan, Siddique, and others did great jobplaying their roles. My favorite dialogue in the film is the finaldialogue of Chelangatt Gopalakrishnan (Sreenivasan) to Ramakrishna Iyer(Siddique) in this film - "Ayal marichu kazhinjathinu sheshamennenkilum ayale nammal angikarikkum. Atanallo Pathivu. AthanalloNamukku Sheelam." This dialogue gave a strong impression to theaudience in the theater. This is so true. Even the real ChelangattGopalakrishnan didn't get the recognition he deserved when he wasalive. We can see how Chelangatt Gopalakrishnan and his contributionswere ignored when he was alive in January 2013 episode of KandathumKettathum program. Even if a Genius gets some success, still he/shewill get ignored when he/she is alive. That was the case with DirectorAlfred Hitchcock. He made so many great films throughout his career. But in his entire life, He was never given an Oscar. Today, many peopleconsider Alfred Hitchcock as the greatest director of all time.

As early as 2002, I wanted to learn about JC Daniel. But during thedays especially 2002 to 2005, I could only find just 3 sentences aboutJC Daniel and his contribution to Cinema. Thanks to Kamal, We have awonderful 2 hours movie about JC Daniel. This movie shows the hardworking efforts of J C Daniel, J.C Daniel's film crew, ChelangattGopalakrishnan, and even Sunderraj (played by Sreejith Ravi and later TG Ravi in this film) not only to our generation. But also futuregenerations to come. And I am sure future generations will rememberDirector Kamal for his efforts "especially" for this film and also theentire film crew for their efforts in this film.

Another great thing about this film is transitioning of a confidentstrong young JC Daniel to a shattered poor old JC Daniel. Same thingwith Janet (Mamtha Mohandas) and P K Rosy (Chandni). We see asupporting and cheerful Janet to an extremely depressed Janet. With PKRosy, we see a character with hope and expectation of a good future tothe point where she had to escape in great fear.

The audio recording of Chelangat Gopalakrishnan produced by Akashawaniis extremely useful for people who are interested in learning moreabout the efforts of Chelangatt Gopalakrishnan.

I rate the film 10 out of 10.

Celluloid (2013) Review by Aravind NC (aravind_n_c@yahoo.co.in) from Kerala
What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is tomake a beginning. The end is where we start from. Beautifully puttogether by T S Eliot, these words seem suggestive of the life of anartist who deserved to be a part of cinematic history, but who almostdidn't. In Celluloid Kamal shows what 'passion for cinema' really meantbefore it became a stylish thing to say. Chandni gives a lifelikeperformance as Rosy with stars in her eyes. Hatzz of to the entire teambehind the project.

The character development is almost complete in 'Celluloid', and I sayalmost since it cannot afford to fill up the cracks that exist in real. It's as much the story of Daniel, as it is of Rosie, and their hauntingportrait seizes you up, even as it goes up in flames. Any comparisonsto 'Harishchandrachi Factory' are odious; the two films barring thefact that they talk about the struggles of a film maker, are asdifferent from each other as chalk and cheese.

It isn't really surprising that Prithviraj makes a convincing Daniel. The vision of the film maker remains safe with him, and he captures thepsychological turmoil that Daniel goes through in the later years ofhis life with great competence. Mamta is impressive as well, though itsnew find Chandni who is the scene stealer in the film. The innocencethat spurts out of the corner of her lips as they stretch into ahesitant smile defines the person that Rosie must have been;unimaginably daring and yet immensely terrified.

Venu's frames maintain the elegance that is required of a biopic, whileSuresh Kollam's art direction is top notch. Pattanam Rasheed'a makeupmakes Daniel's transformation complete, and M Jayachandran's melodiesadd up to the retro feel of the film.

What is astonishing is that Kamal's film, despite maintaining adistance from us with regard to time and space, continues to fascinateus in multiple ways. Passionate, provocative and real heartrending, this is the stuff with which classic films are made.
